First Creek Canyon
The hike begins at the First Creek Canyon parking area along the Scenic Loop Drive and starts with a gentle incline leading into the canyon. As you hike, you’ll be treated to stunning views of sandstone cliffs, unique rock formations, and diverse desert vegetation, including cacti and wildflowers, particularly vibrant in the spring.
The trail culminates at a picturesque creek, which may flow seasonally and can feature small waterfalls, creating a refreshing atmosphere. First Creek Canyon is also great for wildlife observation, with opportunities to spot various bird species, lizards, and small mammals. ⚠️ Summer Hours & Heat Safety: The Scenic Drive is open daily from 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM during the summer season (April through September). Timed Entry reservations are not required from June 1 through September 30.
Summer temperatures in the Mojave Desert can be extreme. Average daytime highs at Red Rock Canyon reach the mid-90s°F, and temperatures frequently exceed 100°F during heat waves.
For your safety, avoid strenuous outdoor activities during periods of extreme heat and when Excessive Heat Warnings, Watches, or Advisories are in effect. Be sure to carry plenty of water, wear sun protection, and plan activities during the cooler morning or evening hours whenever possible.
